I was a guest on a podcast this morning where I got to talk all about Magick and being an eclectic witch. It made me realize that a lot of you have no idea what I’m even talking about when I talk about Magick!
This blog post on Magick was posted to my Patreon a while back, and it’s been long enough now that I can share it with you! If you’d like to read more on Magick, tarot, and other magickal content then become a patron! I post all sorts of interesting stuff over there!
So… “what is magick?” seems like a bit of a strange and loaded question, but we need to address it! So many people are misinformed about magick, and it causes a lot of fear and apprehension, or at the very least skepticism. In order to move forward together on this journey of growing ourselves and learning, we need to be sure we’re on the same page! This doesn’t mean we all need to agree in the end… of course not! It’s ok if you get to the end of this post and still don’t “believe in magick.” We just need to understand each other!
Let’s begin with the obvious: why is there a “k” at the end? This one is easy! We add a “k” in order to distinguish the practice of magick from the illusions and sleight-of-hand of stage magicians. One down!
Ok, before we keep going, please understand that one post cannot possibly cover all there is to know about magick or even entirely what it is. There are several books and articles on the topic, and I would encourage you to research more if you’d like after finishing this post! Of course, we will also delve more into the concepts and practices of magick and other forms of spirituality and personal development here on the blog, as well as over on Patreon and on my social media!
Discussing magick can get complicated because so many people have so many different beliefs on the subject. Some view magick as entirely mystical, others view it as a science, some think of magick as a pleasant placebo, and still others as a combination of all of the above. There are those who think of magick as what’s portrayed in the Harry Potter books, and there are also those who view magick as something evil or wrong.
For the most part, what you believe about magick doesn’t matter a whole lot as long as it’s working for you (like if you view it as a nice placebo or something mystical that truly works), but there ARE some things that need to be addressed:
First, magick is NOT evil. I know that many people (myself included) were raised on the idea that magick is evil and involves worshiping Satan or selling your soul to the devil. To be honest, most witches don’t even believe in Satan, who is a part of the Christian religion, and definitely do NOT worship Satan. And they’ve sold their souls to no one, I can assure you. The persecution of practitioners of magick is quite old, and I’m going to go ahead and say it: outdated. We need to get over it. Magick is actually about respect, hard work, and harmony. Most people who practice magick have chosen to do so in order to improve themselves and the rest of the world, including assisting the environment, fighting for equality of all people, ending unjust religious bias, and more. People choosing to work with a part of nature to improve the world and themselves are not evil, and are not using evil.
Second, magick is not necessarily a part of any religion, and also CAN be a part of a religion if you so choose. Magick in itself is not a religion, nor is witchcraft. Magick is a tool that can be used by anyone, no matter their religious views.
Third, while there aren’t many rules involved with magick, there ARE some! The biggest and most important rule when it comes to the practice of magick is to do no harm. Often, this is stated in one form or another as “let ye harm none” or something along those lines. Magick is not to be used as a method of bullying or oppression! Which leads to the next “rule” which is really more like a law of nature: The Three Fold Law. Basically, it’s karma. Whatever you do will come back to you times three or more. Did you help someone? Great! Imagine that help coming back to you someday x3! Did you bully someone? Imagine THAT coming back to you x3. It’s karma, baby. That’s magick. The Universe craves balance, and trust me, it’ll find it! And really, the last “rule” is not to be greedy or lazy. Ask for a lot. Really, you can! Manifest a million dollars. DO IT. But what do you plan to do with that money? Is it just for you? Perhaps the Universe senses that you don’t need a million, but will assist you in working toward a more reasonable yet still abundant goal. Don’t try to use magick to get out of hard work… you still need to put in effort! Magick is one of the tools in your arsenal, not a slave to your whims.
Magick is NOT as complicated as many people think! I can almost guarantee you that you’ve already done some magick without even realizing it!
Have you ever made a wish and blown out the candles on your birthday cake? Magick. Have you wished on a star? Magick. Said a prayer? Magick. Made a New Year’s Resolution and written down your goals for the year, and tried to visualize accomplishing them? Magick. Watered flowers, worked to save the bees, left a flower un-plucked to continue growing in the wild, gazed out at the ocean in meditation, or cared for an animal? Magick. It’s everywhere and it’s simple and it’s just a part of the world around us. Really, it’s just up to us to begin to recognize it and learn to work with it.
Magick is a part of nature. It’s one part of the energy that makes up our world/universe. Science says that everything is energy… this isn’t some weird woowoo thing. Energy is absolutely scientific, and there are very many unknowns when it comes to the energy that makes up our universe, and even our bodies. Hell, there are parts of the brain that scientists say are just going unused by every single person. Ummm… what??? Magick is one explanation of some of that energy, and the ability to think in those terms and set our minds to it is all in the, well…mind.
I know some who have found it beneficial to think of magick as the Force, like in Star Wars. It’s there, all around you, and all you have to do is tap into it and learn how to work with it. The Force needs balance, right? One part affects another. Or hey, think of all this energy in the Universe as a great big spider web (ew, I know, but it works). When a fly touches part of the web, the spider can feel it across the other side, because it’s still all connected. Have you ever been thinking about someone randomly, and then they call you? Someone touched the web. That’s magick!
Others find it easier to replace “magick” with “manifestation” or “goal-making.” This is where a lot of believers in the placebo affect land. “Visualizing my goals and repeatedly focusing on them using a spell, mantra, or ritual helps me focus on what I want and therefore work harder to make it happen.”
Positivity in success is absolutely key in working magick, but otherwise your belief about what it is or how it works doesn’t matter too much! Truly, so many people’s beliefs are constantly evolving and growing, so it would be almost impossible for something to only work on people who believe the EXACT SAME THING AT ALL TIMES.
I know… it still kind of boggles the mind, right? Like I said, we can’t possibly cover it all in one post! But I do hope that this helped you understand a bit more of what we’re talking about, or alleviated any fears or concerns you had.
