When It Comes To Mother’s Day

By

When the pain and the sorrow
give way in the night
to bittersweet reminiscing

When you close your eyes
and squeeze real tight
but the memories keep persisting

When your heart is screaming
to fill these empty arms
with a piece of your own soul

When you long to come
to this moment in time
feeling exhausted and whole

When you look around
with jealousy
at those who have received

When you watch
the celebrations
of those who have not grieved

When you see dandelion wishes
and butterfly kisses
and gasps at shooting stars

When you smile at them
and move through the day
pretending you don’t have scars

When it’s been ten years
six, three, one
and you almost see them in your head

When you don’t know how
to explain to someone
that they’re not here because they’re dead

When you watch a mother
hold her baby
and gaze at him while he’s sleeping

When you want to honor
those around you
while inside your soul is weeping

When the ache in your soul
is a heavy burden
that has nowhere to go

When you know they care
and want to help
and it’s just that they don’t know

I do.
I am so sorry.
I love you.

I am with you.

Because I know,
no matter how hard you try,
no words can portray

What it is
to be a Mother of Grief
when it comes to Mother’s Day.
